ROLE: Graphic Designer and Production Artist
COMPANY: Harlequin Publishing Ltd.
PROJECT BRIEF: Design and produce the entire book, from cover to interior pages for Ovenly, a hip café/bakery in Brooklyn, NY. The target market for this book is young, urban, cool and creative. The design should feel current Brooklyn style and accessible.
SOLUTION: The cover depicts the bakery’s most popular cake, the Black Chocolate Stout Cake that sits on a teal cake stand (the brand colour). A slice is taken out of the cake to reveal the inside and to invite the viewer in. The white cake stands against a dark background to add drama and impact. The Ovenly logo is used as the title to strengthen the brand and the subtitle is set in a chalk-like, hand-crafted font that continues on the interiors. Each chapter intro spread uses a teal duotone photo and the chapter contents are set in the ‘Ovenly’ shaped box. Process photos are black and white and placed on a grid with the final photo in colour to reveal the result.
